Who's ready to celebrate the 4th National Homeschool Day? We are! Given the directives of DepEd and DOH to limit gathering of many people in enclosed spaces, HAPI is encouraging homeschoolers to be creative in celebrating this day.

When homeschool movers and leaders come together, we can do more! Many years ago as a HAPI Member, I wanted to gather as many homeschool representatives or leaders in the hope that in coming together, we can come up with a collective summary of concerns that well represents homeschoolers in general.

Happy News from HAPI! Between 2014-2018, representatives of the Homeschool Association of the Philippine Islands (HAPI) and other proponents of the Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) educational system worked together with the Philippine’s Department of Education through a series of workshops.

In the words of Senator "Kiko" Pangilinan, “We believe that if we are to shape our nation, we will have to shape first our communities, and if we are to shape our communities, we have to shape our families.” In January 2017, HAPI core member then, Dr. Donna Pangilinan-Simpao suggested to reach out to the Senate of the Philippines. The idea of setting a day as the National Homeschool Day for your country was raised.

Dear First Time Homeschooler, So you finally made the decision to homeschool? Let me congratulate you and yes, jump for JOY with you in making one of the best decisions you will ever make in raising your children. My children and I salute you ( See the photo???) Do not fret, many are with you. Many have gone ahead of you and many are willing to come alongside you. I have gone ahead of you for maybe several years and yes, because of several children, I am still homeschooling level 6 and 4 children.

Let me share with you my top 5 reasons for teaching our children at home — maybe you have the same reasons; or maybe these will help you clarify your own reasons, especially if you’re just exploring homeschooling.

I talk a lot about homeschooling, but I want you to know that my children aren’t always cooperative, there are days when I don’t feel like teaching, and sometimes I am the less than perfect mother who gets annoyed with her kids. Two days ago, I was teaching Titus from his Singapore Math book and he couldn’t get subtraction using number bonds. I could tell he was guessing so I elevated my pitch and my tone was agitated.

Most homeschoolers would probably agree with me when I say that homeschooling is less stressful and challenging when you know that you’re not alone. Support is important and, as we all know, “no man is an island,” and I think this applies especially to homeschooling parents (who are mostly moms).
